PREFACE
The book “Modern Vietnamese” is an outcome of the Innovative Languages Other than English in Schools (ILOTES) project, funded by the Language and Literacy Branch, Department if Employment, Education and Training.
This book accompanied by workbook and audio-cassettes is the first in a series of the Vietnamese teaching materials for second language learners at the post-primary level. The materials are activity is the central focus of teaching and learning.
“Modern Vietnamese” follows the syllabus based on the Australian Language Levels (ALL) Guideline. It is a two year course designed to be used in the classroom by second language learners. This course aims to assist learners to use Vietnamese in a variety of practical and real-life situations and to understand the Vietnamese culture, traditions and customs.
For the past five years, the Centre for Asia Pacific Studies has been committed to Vietnamese language and study development. It has produced the Australian National Strategy for Vietnamese Language and Study (1991). Mr Phan Văn Giưỡng, Senior Lecturer and Research Fellow of the Centre has written Vietnamese language materials for the National Asian Languages Project for use at tertiary level, “Functional Vietnamese” for business people, “Vietnamese Syllabus for Year 7 to 10” and “Vietnamese Study Design” for the Victorian Certificate of Education, and now teaching materials for second language learners from Year 7 to 10 at high schools.
I trust this package will fulfill the need of students, teachers and providers of Vietnamese language study across Australia.
